This is a fantastic book for children and adults alike. It blends history and story telling artfully, making it an enjoyable read. It was quite exciting to learn so many new facts about a part of history that happened practically in my own backyard.

A very well-written and age-appropriate grades true story about a slave in Massachusetts who won her freedom in court, setting the stage for Massachusetts to outlaw slavery in Dec 19, Joey Johnson rated it it was amazing. I unfortunately had never heard of her story until this wonderful book, this was fascinating to me being a history buff and teacher librarian! Our students in my school truly found it inspirational.
I was blessed to have Jana Laiz stop by to speak about it with our 3rd graders! She was wonderful, and truly brought alive the book and her process when writing! This is a must read, and must have for any school library!

Mumbet spoke out and in doing so, sued for her freedom and won. Jackie Rogers has created Mumbet's world with her art which has been compared numerous times to Garth Williams.

The language is simple, understandable and powerful as the book describes a woman who understood the law said she was a free woman. An excellent book for a young person trying to understand the tragedy and horror of slavery and what it meant especially to the ancestors.
